Both fictional images Haskell Wexler refer to real events. While Medium Cool is set into the events surrounding the American Congress of Democrats, Latino depicts the unstable situation in Nicaragua after a leftist coup in 1979. The story of Vietnam vet who is sent by the US Army to train the Nicaraguan Contras rebel troops, is thus an incentive to probe deeper political. The result is similar to the criticism with which Wexler did not spare the American establishment in their antiwar documents seventies.
